A city-based cardiologist in Kolkata has triggered controversy after offering a ₹500 discount on consultation fees to patients who say “Jai Shree Ram” at his clinic, linking the initiative to his belief in bringing political change in West Bengal.

Poster at clinic, social media post draws attention

According to a PTI report, interventional cardiologist Dr P K Hazra displayed a poster at his private clinic announcing the discount. The poster features his photograph with a scarf associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He also shared the poster on social media, drawing widespread reactions.

The offer is applicable only at his private chamber in south Kolkata and not at the hospital where he serves as director of the Interventional Cardiology Department.

Doctor explains motive behind the move

Speaking to PTI, Dr Hazra said the idea was his own and stemmed from concerns about patients from Bengal seeking treatment in other states like Assam, Odisha, and southern India.

He said he wanted to inspire people to think about change in the state’s healthcare scenario and political landscape. While clarifying that he is not formally associated with the BJP, he expressed admiration for development in states governed by the party.

Dr Hazra also revealed that he had hoped to receive a BJP ticket from Pingla in Paschim Medinipur but did not get one. He added that this initiative was another way to encourage political change.

Mixed political reactions

The move has drawn sharp criticism from the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). Senior leader Dr Nirmal Maji alleged that Dr Hazra was trying to gain favour with the BJP to safeguard his wealth and image.

He claimed that such tactics would not influence electoral outcomes, asserting that the TMC continues to enjoy public support.

On the other hand, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Rahul Sinha welcomed the move, stating that it could inspire other doctors to take similar initiatives aimed at improving the state’s healthcare infrastructure.

Doctor praises Mamata Banerjee but calls for faster progress

Despite his remarks, Dr Hazra acknowledged the work done by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying she has contributed positively to the state. However, he argued that West Bengal is lagging behind other states in terms of overall development and healthcare progress.

He also pointed to the ongoing tussle between the Centre and the state government as a factor affecting healthcare growth.
