KGMU Teachers’ Association Demands Fair Probe, Immediate FIR on Doctor’s Complaint

Lucknow: A senior faculty member from the Department of Urology at the prestigious King George’s Medical University was allegedly assaulted and robbed during a road rage incident in Lucknow, triggering outrage among the medical fraternity and sparking allegations of police bias in the handling of the case.

The incident, which reportedly took place near Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) during a traffic jam, has led to a dispute between the doctor and an advocate practising at the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court. While both parties have filed complaints accusing each other of assault and robbery, doctors have alleged that police acted swiftly on the advocate’s complaint while failing to immediately register the doctor’s version of events.

Doctors Allege Victim Was Booked While Complaint Remained Pending

According to reports, members of the medical fraternity expressed concern that despite being the alleged victim, the injured doctor was booked by police based on the advocate’s complaint. They claimed that the doctor’s complaint was not registered immediately, leading to widespread resentment among KGMU faculty members.

A city-based doctor termed the incident unfortunate, stating that a senior KGMU faculty member was allegedly thrashed and robbed of valuable belongings during the altercation. He further alleged that while the other party successfully registered an FIR, the doctor’s family struggled to get a cross-complaint officially recorded.

The doctor also claimed that the injured faculty member was brought to KGMU, where he serves as a senior surgeon, and remained on a stretcher for several hours receiving oxygen support while legal action against the alleged attackers remained pending.

Doctor Alleges Assault, Gold Chain Snatching

According to the complaint filed by the injured doctor, a Swift car allegedly collided with his vehicle during a traffic jam near BBAU. Following a verbal altercation, the occupants of the other vehicle allegedly assaulted him, attempted to snatch his purse, and forcibly removed a gold chain from his neck, causing injuries.

The family further alleged that despite approaching both the BBA police outpost and the Ashiana police station, no FIR was registered based on the doctor’s complaint. After receiving initial treatment at Rajdhani Hospital, the doctor was referred to KGMU for further medical care.

Advocate Files FIR, Levels Counter Allegations

Meanwhile, the advocate involved in the incident lodged an FIR at Ashiana police station, alleging that occupants of a Baleno car assaulted him, strangled him, and snatched his gold chain following a collision near BBAU.

He further claimed that another vehicle carrying five individuals later chased him, threatened him with weapons, and damaged his car. Based on his complaint, police registered a case against unidentified persons and initiated an investigation.

Police Deny Bias, Promise Fair Investigation

Rejecting allegations of favouritism, Ashiana police stated that the investigation was being conducted solely on the basis of evidence.

Ashiana SHO Chhatrapal Singh said that the other party had produced evidence and their vehicle was found damaged. He added that the doctor’s side did not appear at the police station when initially called. However, police have now received the doctor’s complaint and said that a cross-FIR would be considered based on available evidence.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Abhay Pratap Mall also denied any external pressure on the investigation, asserting that authorities had directed police to conduct a fair and impartial probe.

KGMU Teachers’ Association Seeks Immediate Action

The controversy intensified after the KGMU Teachers’ Association wrote to the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), demanding immediate registration of an FIR based on the doctor’s complaint.

Calling attacks on doctors “highly condemnable,” the association expressed concern that an FIR had been registered against the doctor while his own complaint remained pending. The association also sought security for the doctor and his family and urged authorities to ensure a transparent investigation and swift justice.

Faculty members warned that the incident has generated widespread anger within the university community and stressed that prompt action is necessary to maintain confidence among healthcare professionals and ensure that patient care at Uttar Pradesh’s premier medical institution remains unaffected.
