Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has confirmed two cases of monkeypox (Mpox), as announced by state Health Minister Veena George on Wednesday. The infected individuals are two men who recently returned from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

One patient, a resident of Wayanad district, was the first to test positive, followed by a second case involving a resident of Kannur district, according to the minister.

Treatment and Monitoring

Both patients are receiving treatment at Pariyaram Medical College in Kannur. Their contact tracing and movement history are being reviewed, with further details to be released soon.

Health Department Initiatives

The Health Department has issued guidelines urging individuals who had contact with the patients to monitor themselves for symptoms and promptly report any illness.

  • A state-level Rapid Response Team (RRT), chaired by the Health Minister, convened to evaluate the situation and has directed the setup of additional isolation facilities.
  • Travel Advisory: International travelers exhibiting symptoms have been advised to self-isolate and notify the health department immediately.

Awareness and Precautions

Awareness initiatives have been intensified, particularly at airports, while vulnerable groups like the elderly, pregnant women, and children are advised to exercise extra caution.

Recent History

Kerala had previously reported monkeypox cases earlier this year in September, following the global outbreak of the disease. Authorities are maintaining strict surveillance to control further spread.
