Kottayam: In a disturbing case of ragging, police in Kottayam, Kerala, have arrested five students from a government nursing college after first-year students reported horrifying instances of abuse. The accused students have been charged under various sections of the BNS and Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act, and will be presented before a court on Wednesday. The arrested students are from Wayanad, Malappuram, and Kottayam, according to police sources.

Timeline of Abuse: From Threats to Torture

The alleged incidents began on November 16, 2024, and continued until February 10, 2025. The victims, all first-year students, have claimed that the ragging started with threats demanding money through Google Pay. The harassment escalated quickly, with one student stating that he was threatened at knifepoint by the seniors after failing to show them “proper respect.”

Shocking Allegations: Forced Torture and Humiliation

The most horrifying of the allegations occurred on the night of December 13, 2024, when one of the victims reported being dragged into a room by the seniors. They allegedly bound his limbs, poured lotion over his body, and inflicted injuries with a sharp weapon. Another student was reportedly forced to video record the torture. The attackers are also accused of using dumbbells to injure the victim’s private parts.

Money Demands and Further Humiliation

In January 2025, the accused allegedly demanded money from a junior student, much of which was believed to have been spent on alcohol. When the student refused to comply, he was forced to report to a senior’s room, where he was made to kneel for hours while being slapped throughout the night.

Victims Remain Silent Due to Fear

The victims, according to police, were initially too afraid to report the abuse, fearing retaliation from their seniors. They expressed their reluctance to share the harrowing details with their families due to the intense fear and humiliation they had endured.
