Seven more health centres secure top national quality accreditation; Wayanad’s Begur FHC tops with 98.79%

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s public healthcare system has achieved another milestone, with seven additional health institutions receiving the prestigious National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) certification, Health Minister Veena George announced on Friday. With this, the total number of NQAS-accredited public health facilities in the state has climbed to 240 — the highest in the country.

Among the newly certified centres, the Begur Family Health Centre in Wayanad secured the highest score of 98.79%, followed by the Koppam Community Health Centre in Palakkad at 97.63%, and the Perumanna Family Health Centre in Kozhikode at 95.08%. Other facilities awarded the certification include Chaliyar FHC (94.47%), Kunnamangalam FHC (90.75%) in Kozhikode, Chattanchal FHC (86.88%), and Panathur FHC (85.88%) in Kasaragod.

With this addition, Kerala’s NQAS-certified health network now comprises:

  • 7 district hospitals
  • 5 taluk hospitals
  • 12 community health centres
  • 46 urban family health centres
  • 160 family health centres
  • 10 Janakeeya health centres

Additional Certifications and Incentives

Apart from the NQAS, 14 hospitals in Kerala have secured Lakshya certification for quality maternal care, and 5 hospitals have earned Muskan certification for child-friendly services.

The NQAS certification is valid for three years, subject to annual inspections and a national reassessment to ensure sustained quality.

To support and encourage quality improvement, the state government offers financial assistance to certified centres:

  • ₹2 lakh per year for each Family Health Centre and Urban FHC
  • ₹18,000 per service package for Janakeeya Health Centres
  • ₹10,000 per bed annually for other accredited hospitals

Minister’s Remarks

Speaking to The Times of India, Minister Veena George said, “These certifications are a testament to Kerala’s sustained commitment to strengthening primary healthcare and upholding high standards across all public health institutions. Our focus remains on accessible, quality healthcare for all.”
