The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports regarding the death of a 26-year-old woman, allegedly due to medical negligence, following a caesarean delivery at the Women’s Hospital attached to SMS Medical College, Jaipur.

The surgery was performed on August 19, 2025, and the woman reportedly died two days later on August 21 after suffering severe post-operative bleeding.

Taking note of the matter, the NHRC has issued notices to the State Chief Secretary and the Commissioner of Police, Jaipur, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

According to the woman’s family, hospital staff and doctors allegedly ignored her condition even as she bled profusely and cried out in pain after the surgery. They also claimed she was not shifted to the ICU in time, nor were relatives allowed to meet her during the crisis.

The Commission observed that, if true, the incident raises serious concerns over violation of the victim’s human rights.

Media reports from August 22 stated that the woman had walked into the hospital for admission, underwent a c-section on August 19, but bled heavily through the night and died the next morning.

Reacting to the case, the Principal of SMS Medical College described the incident as “serious” and assured that an inquiry has been initiated, with strict action to follow against those found negligent.
