Seven-Storey Facility to Transform Advanced Healthcare Access in Bihar

Patna: The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) is nearing completion of a massive 1,200-bed, seven-storey multi-super-speciality hospital that is expected to redefine public healthcare delivery in Bihar. The ambitious project, slated to become operational by December 2026, aims to significantly expand access to advanced and technology-driven medical services across the state.

According to IGIMS Director Prof Dr Binde Kumar, nearly 60% of the state-of-the-art structure has already been completed. Construction is progressing at a rapid pace, and hospital authorities are confident that the facility will be ready to admit patients by the end of next year.

The upcoming hospital will feature robotic-assisted surgery, expanded intensive care facilities, and one of the largest emergency units in Bihar. Officials describe the project as one of the most comprehensive public healthcare upgrades undertaken in the state in recent years.

A key highlight of the new building is the expansion of modular operation theatres from 12 to 14, along with an increase in ICU capacity to 92 beds. The ground floor will house a 164-bed emergency unit designed as an “emergency super centre,” equipped with six dedicated operation theatres and a central sterilisation service department to ensure seamless critical care services.

This integrated emergency design will allow trauma cases, emergency surgeries, and critical interventions to be managed under one roof, significantly reducing response time and improving patient outcomes. Administrators believe this model will strengthen coordinated care delivery and minimise delays in life-saving procedures.

IGIMS is also preparing to introduce robotic-assisted surgery later this year. Under the leadership of Medical Superintendent Prof Dr Manish Mandal, a team of doctors is undergoing specialised training in Delhi, practising advanced procedures using AI-enabled robotic simulators in gynaecology, urology, prostate, and gallbladder surgeries. Robotic procedures are expected to begin within two months after the completion of training.

Each floor of the seven-storey building has been carefully planned to host dedicated super-speciality departments. These include gastroenterology, gynaecology, paediatrics, mental health, general medicine, neurology, nephrology, urology, spine, and orthopaedic care. Officials say the structured layout will improve coordination between departments and reduce patient waiting times.

With construction gaining momentum, IGIMS is positioning the new hospital as a cornerstone of Bihar’s healthcare modernisation drive. Once operational, the facility is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for complex treatments and will mark a significant leap forward in strengthening public health infrastructure.
