CHICAGO — In a significant move that underscores the growing influence of Indian-American physicians within the United States healthcare framework, the American Medical Association (AMA) has announced the election of three distinguished doctors to the Governing Council of the International Medical Graduates Section (IMGS). Dr. Satheesh Kathula, Dr. Vikram B. Patel, and Dr. Deepu Sudhakaran have been selected for key leadership roles following an election process that concluded in late April 2026.

These appointments come at a critical juncture for the medical community. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) represent more than 25% of all practicing physicians in the United States, often serving as the primary care providers in rural and underserved urban areas. The newly elected leaders are set to officially assume their responsibilities during the 2026 Annual IMGS Meeting, scheduled for June 5, 2026.

Profiles in Leadership

Dr. Satheesh Kathula, a prominent hematologist and oncologist, has long been a vocal advocate for physician well-being and the integration of IMGs into the broader medical landscape. Upon his election, Dr. Kathula remarked that IMGs are the “backbone of the American healthcare system,” emphasizing his commitment to creating pathways that allow these professionals to lead with excellence and dignity. His focus remains on advancing policies that ensure fairness and opportunity for every physician who chooses to practice in America.

Dr. Deepu Sudhakaran, an accomplished general surgeon stepping into the role of Chair in June 2026, brings extensive experience in strategy and policy, aimed at strengthening the voice of the one-third of the U.S. physician workforce comprised of IMGs. Dr. Vikram B. Patel, a specialist in interventional pain medicine, brings valuable experience from his previous work on the AMA Election Task Force and as a House of Delegates teller.

Strategic Objectives for 2026-2027

The AMA International Medical Graduates Section (IMGS) focuses on removing licensure barriers and promoting advancement for foreign-trained physicians. With the new leadership, the council aims to:

  • Strengthen Pathways: Streamline the entry of foreign-trained doctors into the workforce to address shortages.
  • Enhance Advocacy: Represent IMG interests in the AMA House of Delegates.
  • Foster Mentorship: Develop a leadership academy to cultivate future IMG leaders.
