Chaos Erupts at IGIMS After Alleged Clash Between Doctors and Engineers
A shocking altercation between junior doctors and engineering department employees at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna on Thursday allegedly left three staff members injured and created panic inside the hospital premises.
According to reports, the clash took place in the electrical department located on the first floor of the dental block. The injured employees reportedly suffered head injuries and were immediately admitted to the emergency ward for treatment.
The incident triggered chaos across the hospital campus for nearly 30 minutes, with patients, attendants, and hospital staff rushing for safety amid the commotion.
Dispute Allegedly Started During AC Repair Work
Sources claimed that the confrontation stemmed from an earlier dispute that occurred on Wednesday evening. An electrical engineer had reportedly visited the radiology department to repair an air conditioner when an argument broke out with junior resident doctors.
During the altercation, the engineer was allegedly assaulted by a group of 10 to 20 doctors. Following the incident, a complaint was submitted to the hospital administration. However, the injured employees alleged that no immediate action was taken by the institute authorities.
Fresh Violence Reported Near Electrical Department
On Thursday, the engineer, accompanied by his father and a lift engineer, reportedly returned to follow up on the complaint with the institute administration. After allegedly failing to meet the director, they were reportedly attacked near the electrical department by a group of junior resident doctors who were already aware of the complaint, according to allegations made by the employees.
The violent confrontation once again escalated tensions inside the hospital and raised concerns over staff safety within the medical institute.
Police Reach Spot, CCTV Footage Under Examination
Following the incident, police from Shastri Nagar Police Station rushed to the hospital and initiated an investigation.
Speaking to media, Saket Kumar, SDPO-II of Secretariat, stated that the scuffle appeared to have occurred over a maintenance-related issue and that initial findings suggested it was not a major incident.
Police officials are currently examining CCTV footage from the hospital premises to determine the exact sequence of events. Additional police personnel have also been deployed at IGIMS in three shifts to maintain law and order on campus.
Previous Assault Allegations at IGIMS
The latest incident comes shortly after another controversy at IGIMS, where a final-year MBBS student had allegedly been assaulted by hospital staff and security guards following a dispute over delayed treatment.
The recurring incidents have once again put the spotlight on security arrangements and internal conflict management within the premier medical institution.
