Stranded ophthalmologist survives 26-hour journey to safety after chaos erupts in Kuwait City
Sudden Unrest Turns Trip into Nightmare
A Hyderabad-based ophthalmologist, Dr Umesh Bhammarkar, went through a harrowing ordeal after being stranded in Kuwait City due to unexpected unrest. What was meant to be a short international visit quickly spiraled into a life-threatening situation as attacks broke out across the city shortly after his arrival on February 28.
Travel Plans Collapse as Airport Shuts Down
Dr Bhammarkar, an avid traveller who has explored 22 countries, had planned to return the very next day. However, the sudden escalation of violence disrupted all operations. Despite booking two separate flights, he found the airport closed upon arrival, leaving him stranded with no immediate escape route.
Risky Desert Escape Begins
With limited options available, the doctor managed to secure a seat on a tourist bus heading to Jeddah. This marked the beginning of a daunting 1,460-km journey across harsh desert terrain.
He endured a grueling 26-hour bus ride, traveling through tense border regions. Describing the experience, he likened parts of the journey to crossing “no man’s land,” highlighting the fear and uncertainty faced by passengers during border crossings.
Emotional and Physical Ordeal
The long journey took a heavy toll both physically and emotionally. Traveling alongside several other stranded individuals, Dr Bhammarkar navigated extreme conditions and constant anxiety, unsure of what lay ahead.
Safe Return to India
After reaching Jeddah, he finally managed to board a flight to Mumbai. He safely returned home on March 7, 2026, bringing an end to the terrifying episode.
“An Unforgettable Experience”
Recalling the incident, Dr Bhammarkar said he was unaware of the situation upon arrival and only realized the gravity after speaking with his wife. With the help of friends, he found temporary safety before beginning his escape journey.
The experience, he said, will remain etched in his memory as one of the most challenging moments of his life.
