Doctor Saves Accident Victim in Kottayam

Timely CPR gives second chance at life

Kottayam: A doctor from Kottayam, Dr Ajayakumar S, saved a 50-year-old accident victim through prompt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The incident occurred on Tuesday night while he was driving to pick up his wife near Adoor in Pathanamthitta.

Two-wheeler hits autorickshaw

About a kilometre into the Enathu–Mannady stretch, Dr Ajayakumar noticed a speeding two-wheeler overtaking his car. Moments later, the rider collided head-on with an oncoming autorickshaw, throwing both the rider and the vehicle onto the road.

Doctor performs lifesaving CPR

Dr Ajayakumar stopped his car and rushed to assist the unconscious man, later identified as 50-year-old Sreejith from Mannady. He performed two cycles of CPR, after which the patient regained consciousness, highlighting the impact of quick medical intervention.

Experienced medical officer

Dr Ajayakumar, 54, serves as a medical officer at the Community Health Centre Kulakkada in Kollam. With 17 years of experience, he stated this was his first encounter requiring roadside emergency resuscitation.

Collision dynamics

CCTV footage revealed that the two-wheeler moved to the wrong side of the road after overtaking, resulting in a head-on collision with the autorickshaw. The autorickshaw swerved into a nearby shop, but its passengers, including two children, were largely unharmed.

The doctor found the bike rider lying on his side and immediately assessed his pulse. With a nearby temple festival crowd present, Dr Ajayakumar identified himself as a doctor, enlisted bystanders’ help, and administered CPR while controlling bleeding and immobilising a fractured leg.

An ambulance soon arrived, and the victim was first taken to the Taluk Hospital in Adoor and later admitted to Government Medical College, Kottayam, for further treatment. Dr Ajayakumar confirmed the patient had also suffered a head injury.

Dr Ajayakumar continues to monitor the patient’s recovery over the phone, maintaining regular contact to check on his progress since the accident.
