BIRBHUM – Tensions escalated at a local health centre in Birbhum district on Tuesday after a female nursing officer was allegedly assaulted by an intoxicated man. The incident has once again brought the issue of healthcare worker safety to the forefront, leading to brief disruptions in medical services as staff protested the lack of adequate security.
The Incident
The assault occurred during the busy morning hours when a man, reportedly in a heavily inebriated state, entered the facility accompanying a patient. Witnesses state that the individual began behaving erratically and creating a disturbance in the outpatient department.
When the on-duty nurse requested the man to maintain decorum and cooperate with the hospital protocols, he allegedly turned violent. The verbal altercation quickly escalated into a physical assault, during which the nurse was struck and pushed. Fellow staff members and security personnel eventually intervened to restrain the individual until the local police arrived at the scene.
Staff Protest and Security Demands
Following the incident, the nursing staff and medical officers at the health centre halted work temporarily to condemn the attack. The protesters highlighted that such incidents have become increasingly common in rural health units where security is often minimal or entirely absent during late-night and early-morning shifts.
“We are here to save lives, but who will save ours?” questioned one of the protesting nurses. “An intoxicated person entering a medical facility and physically attacking a female staff member is unacceptable. We cannot continue to work under constant fear of physical harm.”
Police Action and Investigation
Local police officials confirmed that the accused was taken into custody immediately after the incident. A formal complaint has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to the assault of a public servant and the disruption of government duties.
Initial medical examinations of the accused confirmed high levels of alcohol consumption. Authorities are also investigating if there were any underlying grievances regarding patient care that might have triggered the outburst, though they maintained that violence is never a permissible form of protest.
Broader Impact on Healthcare
This attack in Birbhum comes amid a series of reported assaults on medical professionals across West Bengal, fueling demands for a more robust “Central Protection Act” for healthcare workers. District health officials have promised to review the security arrangements at primary and block-level health centres, including the potential installation of more CCTV cameras and an increase in the number of security personnel deployed during peak hours.
Medical services at the centre resumed later in the afternoon after senior administrative officials assured the staff of a speedy investigation and enhanced safety measures moving forward.
