NEW DELHI — In a major expansion of India’s postgraduate and super-specialty medical education infrastructure, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, officially launched 11 new academic courses during the 23rd Convocation Ceremony of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). The prestigious event, held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, marked a major milestone for the country’s clinical workforce. A total of 26,396 candidates were conferred Diplomate of National Board (DNB), Doctorate of National Board (DrNB), Fellowship of National Board (FNB), and NBEMS Diploma qualifications. Additionally, 137 medical toppers received prestigious gold medals in person for outstanding academic performance.

Addressing the large gathering of doctors, educators, and health administrators, Minister Nadda emphasized that the newly launched courses are carefully designed to strengthen advanced clinical capabilities and directly improve patient care across the country. He framed a healthy India as the foundational pillar of the national “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision, stating that while medical infrastructure serves as the country’s healthcare “hardware,” doctors function as the critical “software” driving the system.

Launch of 11 Specialized Courses and the ONOS Initiative

The introduction of the 11 new academic courses by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare represents a deliberate policy shift toward addressing gaps in super-specialty medical niches. While the specific list of disciplines will be integrated into the upcoming NBEMS seat matrix, the ministry confirmed that these programs are explicitly focused on advanced tertiary-level care, critical patient monitoring, and highly specialized interventions.

Alongside the curriculum expansion, the Health Minister rolled out the One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) initiative specifically for NBEMS-accredited institutions. This government-approved project is designed to eliminate financial barriers to global scientific databases. It provides students, researchers, and faculty members with nationwide, equitable access to high-impact scholarly research articles, international journals, and top-tier academic medical publications. For practicing doctors and postgraduates, this creates a uniform research environment, ensuring that a trainee at a regional hospital enjoys the same library and literature access as a doctor at an elite central institute.

Decade of Expansion: Escalating India’s Medical Seat Matrix

During his address, the minister shared data illustrating the rapid growth of India’s medical education infrastructure over the last decade:

  • Institutional Scale: The total number of medical colleges nationwide has grown from 387 to 818 facilities.
  • Undergraduate Influx: Total MBBS seats across the country have expanded to nearly 1.28 lakh seats.
  • Postgraduate Specialization: Total PG seats have increased from roughly 31,000 to nearly 85,000 seats.
  • AIIMS Footprint: India has transitioned from having a single apex AIIMS institution at the close of the 20th century to 23 functioning AIIMS campuses today.

Furthermore, the government reiterated its ambitious target to establish 75,000 additional undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats by 2029. Of this quota, approximately 23,000 seats have already been successfully added over the past two academic years. To sustain this growth, the central government has sanctioned nearly ₹15,000 crore for the 2026–2029 triennium specifically dedicated to bolstering medical college infrastructure and training capabilities.

A Call to Lifelong Clinical Learning

The ceremony concluded with a charge to the graduating specialists, delivered by Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava and NBEMS President Dr. Abhijat Sheth. Doctors were reminded that medical education is both a unique privilege and a serious social responsibility. The leadership panel urged the 26,396 newly minted specialists to maintain a spirit of intellectual curiosity throughout their careers, emphasizing that continuous, lifelong learning remains the only reliable path to clinical excellence and safe patient care.
