The Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, has been designated as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Rare Diseases by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Chief Minister’s Office announced on Wednesday.
According to the notification, AMCH’s designation under the National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD), 2021 reflects the state’s strengthening healthcare system under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
“Assam Medical College & Hospital, Dibrugarh, has been designated as a Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases under NPRD 2021 by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India,” the CMO stated, citing the official communication.
As per the provisions of NPRD 2021, AMCH will take on responsibilities related to diagnosis, treatment, research, and awareness of rare diseases, while also adhering to periodic guidelines from the Centre.
With this recognition, AMCH is expected to not only provide advanced care for patients suffering from rare diseases but also play a key role in national-level research and healthcare innovation in this field.
The announcement follows similar initiatives across India to strengthen rare disease management. Recently, Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), Delhi, inaugurated a state-of-the-art Genetic Department and Lab for Rare Diseases, hailed as one of the finest facilities of its kind.
