Goa requires one more medical college: Dean Goa Medical College

Panaji: Shivanand Bandekar, Dean, The Goa Medical College (GMC) said that considering the growing demand for MBBS, State will require yet another medical college to accommodate candidates in near future. Health Minister Vishwajit Rane had last month announced the government decision to drop the proposed private medical college project, supposed to come up in South Goa.

Bandekar said that with the National Medical Commission (NMC) stalling granting permissions to above 150 seats to medical college, the State run GMC, will be in no position to take additional intake in near future. “We were lucky to get 200 seats. NMC has now stopped granting more than 150 seats,” he said. Earlier this month, NMC permitted GMC to increase its MBBS seats from 180 to 200 for the academic year 2024-25. Bandekar said that of the additional 20 seats, the admissions for which commenced on Monday, 17 would be reserved for Goan candidates while three would be filled under all India quota.

“In order to accommodate the future candidates, inspiring to become doctors, State will be in need of new medical college. The new college can take care of additional 150 seats,” he said.

During the first round of admissions to the NEET-based courses, conducted by Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) all 750 seats were occupied. The DTE had received close to 3,000 applications for these seats. The admission to fill-up 20 additional MBBS seats is part of second round of admissions that will conclude on September 18.
