Comprehensive SOPs Rolled Out
In a significant step towards improving transparency and efficiency, the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at Goa Medical College (GMC) has introduced a detailed set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). These cover medico-legal autopsies, morgue preservation, embalming, and free hearse van services, ensuring accountability at every stage.
Clear Guidelines for Stakeholders
The SOPs provide structured instructions for police officers, medical staff, and families. They outline documentation requirements, timelines, and protocols for autopsy procedures, body preservation, and handing over of remains, reports Digital Goa.
Stricter Security and Confidentiality
The notification emphasizes dignity and confidentiality during medico-legal processes. Unauthorized entry into the department has been restricted, while videography and photography within the premises have been strictly prohibited to prevent the circulation of sensitive visuals.
SOPs for Casualty Department Next
In a related move, GMC Dean Dr. S. Bandekar announced in June that similar SOPs will soon be implemented in the casualty department. This decision, taken in consultation with the medical superintendent and departmental heads, aims to streamline emergency operations and ensure the facility is used exclusively for urgent cases, reports TOI.
Advisory Board for Quality Healthcare
Separately, the Goa government has decided to set up an expert advisory board comprising specialists from AIIMS, WHO, the Union Government, and across the country. The board will oversee the functioning of GMC and GMCH to align healthcare services with international standards, Medical Dialogues reported earlier.
