Guwahati: A serious sexual harassment and abuse of authority complaint at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has escalated to the Prime Minister’s Office, prompting the Assam government to call for urgent action, including the immediate suspension of the accused official.
Complaint Routed Through CPGRAMS, Reaches PMO
The मामला came to light after a formal grievance was filed via the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS), which was addressed to the PMO. The complaint has been attributed to an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at GMCH, according to reports.
An official communication dated March 23, 2026, issued from Janata Bhawan in Dispur by the Women and Child Development Department, confirmed that the matter has now been forwarded to the Medical Education and Research Department for necessary action.
Action Initiated Under POSH Act
Authorities have directed that the मामले be examined under the provisions of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act (POSH Act), which mandates institutions to ensure a safe working environment and address complaints of workplace harassment.
The subject line of the official communication explicitly calls for the “immediate suspension” of the accused, underlining the gravity of the allegations.
Allegations Include Harassment and Administrative Obstruction
According to sources, the complainant had earlier filed a report at Panbazar Women Police Station in February. In her complaint, she alleged that the GMCH principal repeatedly insisted on private meetings and made remarks that caused discomfort.
She further accused the administration of obstructing her professional responsibilities, including delays in formalizing her appointment as Head of Department and resistance to her academic proposals.
State Govt Orders Probe, Police Begin Investigation
Following the allegations, the Assam government constituted a two-member inquiry committee led by women officials to investigate the case. Meanwhile, police have initiated a preliminary investigation into the matter.
The accused principal, responding earlier, stated that he had been instructed not to speak to the media and had already submitted all necessary documents for the inquiry process.
Case Moves Beyond Institutional Level
Officials noted that the escalation of the complaint to the PMO indicates that the issue has moved beyond the institutional framework, requiring higher-level intervention.
The official document described the grievance as “self-explanatory,” suggesting that detailed allegations have already been submitted as part of the formal complaint.
Focus on Workplace Safety in Medical Institutions
The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding workplace safety and accountability in medical institutions. Under the POSH Act, organizations are required to establish internal complaint committees and ensure timely redressal of such grievances.
The Medical Education and Research Department is now expected to review the complaint and take further action based on its findings.
