NEW DELHI — In a development that has reignited intense public debate surrounding the legal boundaries of online speech and influencer accountability, the Delhi Police arrested dermatologist and popular social media commentator Dr Neelam Singh, widely recognized online by his digital moniker “The Skin Doctor.” The enforcement action, carried out by personnel from the Vasant Kunj police station, followed a formal criminal complaint filed on behalf of the family of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur.

The dispute stems from a series of highly sensitive posts shared on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), which targeted the Kapur family amid an active, multi-billion-rupee corporate inheritance battle. While the medical professional was taken into custody following a preliminary interrogation, a Delhi court intervened within hours, granting him immediate bail after concluding that the controversial remarks lacked established criminal intent.

Origin of the Social Media Dispute

Dr Neelam Singh, a practicing dermatologist, originally cultivated a prominent digital footprint by creating medical and skincare-related content before progressively expanding into socio-political commentary, current affairs analysis, and right-wing political critique. Operating the highly active account @theskindoctor13, Singh had amassed a substantial digital audience across major networks including X, Instagram, and YouTube.

The legal escalation occurred after Singh published commentary that reportedly questioned the precise medical circumstances surrounding the passing of Sunjay Kapur, the late chairman of the automotive components manufacturer Sona Comstar. Screenshots circulating online indicated that the deleted posts cast aspersions on the timing, validity, and overall authenticity of the late businessman’s execution of his final will and testament.

Sunjay Kapur passed away in London due to sudden cardiac-related issues, leaving behind an sprawling estate valued at an estimated ₹30,000 crore. Following his death, a bitter, multi-party inheritance dispute erupted involving his mother Rani Kapur, his current wife Priya Sachdeva Kapur, and his children from his previous marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor. The high-stakes legal warfare has already reached the Supreme Court of India, which recently appointed a former Chief Justice of India as an independent mediator to prevent a prolonged court battle.

Police Intervention and Immediate Bail

Characterizing the influencer’s public assertions as entirely false, malicious, and deeply defamatory during a sensitive period of family mourning, the Kapur family initiated legal proceedings via the Vasant Kunj police authorities. Investigators subsequently summoned Singh for questioning before officially taking him into custody. The abrupt arrest instantly triggered a massive wave of polarization across Indian social media spaces, with advocates of free speech characterizing the police action as an overly heavy-handed response to public opinion, while critics argued that digital creators must face harsh consequences for spreading unverified claims regarding sub judice corporate cases.

Represented by a team of defense advocates, Singh’s legal counsel presented his version of events before the designated Duty Judge later that evening. The defense argued that the social media remarks were simply an analytical critique rooted in publicly accessible affidavits and lacked any underlying malicious intent or mens rea to execute a crime.

Concurring with the defense arguments, the Hon’ble Duty Judge ordered Singh’s immediate release on bail. In the judicial assessment, the court noted that it failed to observe any distinct criminal offense or fraudulent motivation within the shared text, openly questioning the necessity of a formal police arrest. Senior legal professionals monitoring the case subsequently labeled the charges entirely frivolous, emphasizing that standard civil defamation suits remain the appropriate mechanism to handle online grievances rather than deploying state machinery for sudden criminal detentions. While Dr Singh has resumed his online activities, local police sources indicate that the wider administrative investigation into the origins of the online commentary remains ongoing.
