Nagpur: Days after a first-year female postgraduate medico from Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital (Mayo) accused the Head of the Forensic Medicine Department of sexual harassment, the police have registered an FIR against the senior professor based on preliminary findings. The medico had approached authorities after months of alleged harassment.
Allegations of Mental Torment and Threats
According to the FIR, the medico alleged that the professor mentally harassed her, made inappropriate gestures, and offered undue favours for nearly nine months. She claimed that when she resisted his advances, he humiliated her, insulted her in front of others, and allegedly threatened to cancel her PG seat. Unable to tolerate the continued harassment, she finally approached the police.
Resident Doctors Demand Immediate FIR
The FIR was filed after Central Maharashtra MARD and IGGMC MARD Nagpur pressed for swift action. Central MARD General Secretary Dr Suyash Dhavane and IGGMC MARD President Dr Aditya Thete met the Nagpur Police Commissioner, urging that the complaint be converted into an FIR without delay. They cautioned that any postponement could hamper the investigation or allow the accused to influence evidence or witnesses.
Defence from Sources Close to Accused Professor
Even as the investigation proceeds, sources close to the professor told TOI that he is a strict and disciplined faculty member who may have earned opposition from some students. However, the complainant’s detailed account paints a troubling picture of persistent harassment and intimidation over several months.
Survivor’s Detailed Account of Harassment
The medico alleged that the harassment occurred between February 3 and November 19, 2025. She claimed the professor frequently summoned her to his cabin, asked her to sit close, and spoke in a low tone to make her uncomfortable. In one such instance, she alleged that he asked her to remove her apron while checking her synopsis. She further claimed that he instructed her to report to work in a “special manner,” which she found inappropriate and degrading.
Claims of Inappropriate Touching and Coercion
According to TOI, the doctor alleged that the professor passed unsolicited remarks about her clothes and makeup and even touched her inappropriately during an autopsy procedure in the mortuary in the presence of other doctors. In another incident, she claimed he demanded that she file a false complaint against an associate professor in exchange for granting her leave approval.
Multiple Junior Doctors Supporting the Survivor
The complainant stated that she is not the only victim, alleging that three other junior doctors had experienced similar behaviour. Encouraged by colleagues who advised her to escalate the matter, she submitted a written complaint to Mayo Hospital Dean Dr Ravi Chavan before approaching the police. The case is now being probed by the hospital’s internal complaints committee and higher medical education authorities.
Police Probe Underway; Past Allegations Emerge
Based on her complaint and preliminary inquiries, Tehsil Police booked the professor under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He is expected to be summoned soon for questioning. A senior police official said that similar allegations surfaced against the professor in 2015 as well, causing considerable uproar at the time. The investigation into the latest complaint is currently underway.
