Mumbai: The Mumbai Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the former trustees of Lilavati Hospital for alleged cheating amounting to Rs 85 crore.

The complaint was filed by the current trustee Mohit Suresh Mathur at the Bandra police station, leading to the FIR being lodged on Monday. According to the complaint, the former trustees—Chetan Vijay Mehta, Rashmi Mehta, and Bhavin Mehta—are accused of seizing control of the hospital trust using fake documents between 2000 and 2023.

The complainant alleges that the former trustees withdrew funds in the name of lawyers’ fees, consultation charges, and purchase of medicines, which were allegedly diverted for their personal use. Mathur had approached a magistrate’s court, seeking an order for the police to register an FIR.

Following the court’s directive, the FIR was filed under charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust as per the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for offences that allegedly occurred before 2024. The police have launched an investigation into the matter.

As of now, comments from the hospital spokesperson and the accused individuals are awaited. The police are expected to issue notices to the accused and ask them to join the investigation.
