Fedex Courier Scam: Chennai doctor conned of Rs.15 Lakhs

Chennai: In yet another incident of doctors being targeted by cyber-thugs, a Chennai based doctor was conned by a Rajasthan youth who impersonated a Mumbai police officer and extracted Rs.15.26 Lakhs from the doctor by falsely accusing the doctor of being involved in a drug smuggling racket. The doctor said that he received a call from a person stating that he was from FedEx courier, Mumbai branch and informed the doctor that a parcel having contraband for Taiwan has been booked in his name. He further said that the case is being investigated by Mumbai Police. Shortly after the first call, the doctor received another call from an individual who posing as officer from Mumbai police of the entire incident and accused doctor of having illegal money in his bank account. The doctor on hearing this got scared and the scammer asked him to transfer funds to a specified account. The scammer further told the doctor that once he is proved innocent the money will be transferred back to his account. The doctor transferred a total of Rs.15.26 in two installments. Subsequently the doctor visited to enquire about the details of his transferred and realized that he has been conned. He filed a complaint which led to the arrest of a 23 youth from Rajasthan. The investigation is still in progress
