New healthcare infrastructure to benefit over 7.5 lakh ESI beneficiaries across multiple districts

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated a newly constructed 100-bedded ESIC Hospital at Doddaballapur and remotely laid the foundation stone for another 100-bedded ESIC Hospital at Bellary on May 3, 2026. The initiative marks a major step in strengthening healthcare delivery under the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Scheme in Karnataka.

During the programme, the Minister also honoured construction workers involved in building the facility and distributed cash benefits to ESI beneficiaries, highlighting the government’s focus on both infrastructure and welfare.

Doddaballapur Hospital to Serve Over 5.5 Lakh Beneficiaries

The newly inaugurated ESIC Hospital at Doddaballapur is a 100-bedded multi-specialty secondary care facility developed over 5 acres at a cost of ₹101.14 crore. The hospital will cater to more than 1.42 lakh insured workers and their families, benefiting around 5.5 lakh people across Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur, Tumkuru, and Kolar districts.

The facility offers key services including General Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, emergency care, and advanced diagnostic services such as radiology, laboratory testing, and a blood bank. It also includes 32 staff quarters to support healthcare personnel.

Bellary ESIC Hospital to Expand Regional Healthcare Access

The proposed ESIC Hospital at Bellary will be constructed over 5.21 acres with an estimated investment of ₹150 crore. Once completed, it is expected to provide modern healthcare services to around 64,000 insured workers and their families, covering nearly 2 lakh beneficiaries in the Bellary Division.

ESI Scheme Coverage Expands Across Karnataka

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation scheme, introduced in Karnataka in 1958 starting from Bengaluru, now extends across all 31 districts in the state.

As of March 31, 2025, the scheme covers over 2.01 lakh employers and more than 35.33 lakh insured persons, including 11.22 lakh women, benefiting a total of 1.37 crore people. The infrastructure includes a Regional Office at Binnypeth, six Sub-Regional Offices, 48 Branch Offices, and 125 ESIS dispensaries delivering primary care.

Strong Secondary and Medical Education Network

Secondary care services under the scheme are supported by ESIC hospitals at Rajajinagar, Indiranagar, and Gulbarga, along with seven state-run ESIS hospitals.

These are further strengthened through empanelment with 143 hospitals for secondary care and 123 hospitals for super-specialty treatment. Notably, the Rajajinagar facility functions as a medical college and postgraduate institute, while Gulbarga hosts a medical and dental college, and Indiranagar operates a nursing college.

Together, these institutions provide reserved seats for wards of insured persons, including 136 MBBS seats, 28 dental seats, 60 nursing seats, and 96 paramedical seats annually, reinforcing both healthcare delivery and medical education in the state.

Strengthening Worker-Centric Healthcare

The inauguration and foundation-laying reflect the government’s continued push to expand accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for workers under the ESI scheme, ensuring wider coverage and improved medical infrastructure across Karnataka.
