First-of-its-kind initiative aims to bridge healthcare communication gap in underserved regions

In a significant step toward strengthening public health outreach, All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bibinagar, located in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, has launched a community radio service broadcasting on 89.6 FM. With this move, it becomes the first AIIMS institution in India to introduce such a facility dedicated to public health communication.

Expanding healthcare access beyond hospital walls

The initiative is designed to take essential medical information beyond the hospital premises and make it easily accessible to people, especially those living in rural and underserved areas. The radio station will cover a radius of approximately 10 kilometres, targeting communities where access to reliable healthcare information remains limited.

Through its regular programming, the station will broadcast awareness messages on disease prevention, health tips, and updates on various government health programmes and initiatives.

Expert-led programmes to promote preventive care

Officials have stated that the content will include expert discussions, educational segments, and focused health campaigns. These programmes will emphasize early detection of diseases, preventive healthcare practices, and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The initiative is expected to play a key role in improving public understanding of health issues and empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their well-being.

“Dial a Doctor” to enable real-time interaction

A major highlight of the service is an interactive segment titled “Dial a Doctor,” which allows listeners to directly connect with qualified medical professionals. This feature will enable people to ask health-related questions and receive timely guidance, making medical advice more accessible—particularly for those who cannot frequently visit healthcare facilities.

Strengthening trust between doctors and communities

Dr. A. S. Subathra, head of the operational committee for the community radio station, emphasized that such initiatives help reduce the communication gap between healthcare providers and the public. She noted that improved engagement can build trust and encourage individuals to seek medical advice at the right time.

Residents within the coverage area have been encouraged to tune in regularly to stay informed through simple, accurate, and reliable health information.
