Dr Thomas Alexander, Interventional Cardiologist and head of the Cardiology Division at Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH), Coimbatore, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th Annual Conference of the Tamil Nadu Interventional Council (TIC 2026). The honour recognises his leadership, pioneering contribution to the STEMI Project in India and more than three decades of service in cardiovascular medicine.
Award Recognises Contribution to Cardiology
The award was presented during TIC 2026, the council’s annual flagship conference held from July 17 to 19, 2026, at the Hyatt Regency in Chennai. Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar and Dr K.G. Arunraj, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu, formally conferred the honour.
Dr Thomas Alexander is associated with KMCH Multispeciality Hospital on Avanashi Road and has 36 years of experience in cardiology. He completed his undergraduate, postgraduate and superspeciality training at Christian Medical College, Vellore, and subsequently worked as a consultant in Vellore.
Experience in Interventional Cardiology
Between 1991 and 1993, Dr Alexander completed a three-year fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
He has served as the principal investigator in numerous clinical trials involving coronary stent systems, coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndrome with diabetes mellitus, pulmonary artery hypertension, atrial fibrillation and decompensated heart failure.
Dr Alexander has published more than 30 papers in national and international journals, including Heart, the International Journal of Cardiology, the British Medical Journal and Paediatric Cardiology.
Leadership in STEMI Care
Dr Alexander is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Indian College of Cardiology and the Cardiological Society of India. He continues to be actively involved in research and serves as the Director of STEMI INDIA, a not-for-profit organisation working to develop STEMI systems of care in India.
His work in developing STEMI systems has been recognised as a significant contribution to improving cardiovascular care and emergency treatment systems.
