Senior Oncologist Recognised for Contributions to Cancer Care

Senior medical oncologist Dr S. G. Ramanan has been conferred the Dr K.V. Thiruvengadam Health Care Excellence Award–2026 in recognition of his significant contributions to cancer treatment and patient care. The award acknowledges his longstanding commitment to advancing oncology services in India.

Dr Ramanan, Senior Consultant – Medical Oncology at Apollo Cancer Centre, Chennai, received the honour at a ceremony jointly organised by the Rotary Club of Madras East and Kauvery Hospital. He was recognised for his patient-centric approach and efforts to combine scientific medical practices with compassion and humane treatment.

With extensive experience in oncology, Dr Ramanan specialises in the treatment of breast cancer, soft tissue and bone sarcomas, and haematological malignancies. He is also actively involved in mentoring postgraduate students in medical oncology and guiding the next generation of cancer specialists.

Apart from his clinical responsibilities, he serves as Managing Trustee of Cancare Foundation and is one of the directors of Madras Cancer Care Foundation. He is also the Founder Trustee of Cancer Research and Relief Trust, reflecting his commitment to cancer awareness, research and patient support initiatives.

Dr Ramanan holds an MBBS and MD in General Medicine, along with a DM in Medical Oncology. He has additional certification in Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) and is a Member of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP). He has contributed extensively to peer-reviewed national and international journals and has received multiple accolades for his work in oncology.

Over the years, he has served as faculty for the DNB Oncology programme at Apollo Cancer Centre and has collaborated with the Biotechnology Department at IIT Madras in the field of biobanking. His work bridges clinical care, research and academic development.

The award was presented by K. Narayanasamy, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, who attended the function as chief guest. Organisers noted that this year marks the 20th edition of the award.

Koushik MuthuRaja M., chairperson of the Dr. KVT Awards Committee, stated that the 2026 ceremony coincides with the birth centenary year of Dr K.V. Thiruvengadam, making the occasion particularly significant in celebrating excellence in healthcare.
