Pioneer of Haematology in Kerala and Respected Medical Educator No More

Thiruvananthapuram: Eminent haematologist Dr K.A. Salim passed away on Tuesday at the age of 86, marking the end of an illustrious medical career that spanned several decades. He was widely regarded as one of Kerala’s most respected medical educators and blood disease specialists.

Dr. Salim was instrumental in establishing the Department of Haematology at Kozhikode Medical College, a milestone that significantly strengthened specialised medical services in the state. Through his efforts, the department grew into a centre of excellence, training countless doctors and serving thousands of patients.

He began his medical journey by earning his MBBS degree from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 1963. Driven by a passion for academic excellence, he went on to complete his MD in General Medicine in 1966, laying a strong foundation for his future specialisation.

Seeking advanced knowledge, Dr. Salim pursued postgraduate training abroad. He earned prestigious qualifications from the Royal College of Physicians, London, in 1978 and the Royal College of Pathologists, London, in 1982, along with several other international fellowships that enhanced his global standing.

According to reports by Mathrubhumi, Dr. Salim was considered one of the country’s most experienced specialists in the field of blood studies and treatment. His expertise and clinical precision earned him admiration from peers and patients alike.

Beyond India, he also shared his knowledge internationally. He served as an associate professor at the College of Medicine, King Khalid University in Saudi Arabia, and worked as a consultant with the UK’s National Health Service in London, contributing significantly to global medical practice.

Throughout his career, Dr. Salim mentored generations of medical students across Kerala. Many of his students went on to become leading doctors, carrying forward his legacy of dedication, discipline and compassion in healthcare.

Dr. Salim is survived by his children — Dr. Shafeeq (Birmingham, UK), Rafiq (Saudi Arabia), Dr. Ashiq, and Dr. Sajik (UK). His funeral will be held on Wednesday at Pettah Juma Masjid in Thiruvananthapuram, according to South First.
