Chennai: The Legal Coordination Committee for Government Doctors (LCC) has voiced strong opposition to the Tamil Nadu government’s recent decision to appoint 658 specialist doctors through walk-in interviews, including 207 obstetricians. The LCC criticized the move, which was announced by the state’s Health Minister, stating that it would cause significant confusion and could severely set back the state’s healthcare sector.
The committee emphasized that Tamil Nadu, renowned for its strong healthcare infrastructure, should follow established recruitment procedures, such as those implemented by the Medical Services Recruitment Board (MRB). LCC raised concerns over the fairness and transparency of walk-in interviews, noting that similar proposals faced opposition from both doctors and the DMK under the previous administration.
LCC also recommended that new doctors be appointed to supernumerary positions under the Directorate of Medical Services and Directorate of Public Health to prevent disruption to the careers of existing specialist doctors, especially those completing higher education. They urged the government to prioritize experienced doctors, particularly those who have worked for two to three years in Primary Health Centres, for these positions.
The LCC has appealed to the state government to reconsider the walk-in interview process and instead adopt a more transparent and structured approach to recruitment.
