A shocking incident of violence against healthcare workers has been reported from Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College, where a woman doctor, security personnel, and technical staff were allegedly assaulted by attendants following the death of a patient. The घटना, which occurred late Wednesday night, has triggered widespread outrage within the medical community.
Patient Brought Dead, Doctor Attacked Despite Efforts
According to Dr Manik Sehgal, president of the Medical College Faculty Association, a heart attack patient was brought to the emergency ward around midnight in a critical condition.
“He had no vitals when he was brought in. The doctor on duty made every possible effort to revive him, but he could not be saved,” Sehgal said.
Soon after the patient was declared dead, attendants allegedly turned aggressive, verbally abusing and physically attacking the woman doctor.
Assault Caught on CCTV, Staff Also Injured
In a desperate attempt to escape, the doctor reportedly rushed towards the minor operation theatre, but the attackers allegedly chased her and tried to assault her again. Security guards and technical staff who intervened were also beaten.
The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed within the hospital premises, which is now being used as key evidence in the investigation.
Medical Fraternity Condemns Attack
The Faculty Association strongly condemned the incident, calling it “deplorable” and demanding strict legal action against those responsible. Doctors and staff reiterated the urgent need for enhanced security measures to ensure their safety at the workplace.
Administration Assures Action Amid Rising Concerns
Medical college Principal Dr Pankaj Gupta acknowledged the seriousness of the matter, noting that similar incidents of violence and misconduct have occurred in the past.
“It is essential that the accused are arrested and strict action is taken to prevent such incidents in the future,” he stated.
Protest by Hospital Staff, Road Blocked
Following the incident, outsourced employees and hospital staff staged a sit-in protest outside the campus, blocking nearby roads and demanding immediate arrests and better security arrangements.
The protest was later withdrawn after authorities assured prompt action and improvements in safety infrastructure.
FIR Registered, Four Detained
Police have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after examining CCTV footage.
Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Saklani confirmed that four individuals have been detained for questioning.
“Efforts are underway to identify and arrest all accused. They will be apprehended soon,” he said.
Longstanding Demand for Better Security
