Mumbai: In a shocking act of violence inside one of Mumbai’s busiest hospitals, a doctor at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital was brutally stabbed by the brother of a female colleague, leaving him critically injured. The attack, which unfolded inside the hospital premises, has triggered alarm over the safety of medical professionals in government hospitals.
According to reports, the accused entered the hospital premises in a fit of rage and attacked the doctor with a knife. The injured doctor was immediately rushed to the emergency ward of the same hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. While doctors have confirmed that his condition is stable, he continues to be closely monitored due to the severity of his injuries.
Personal Dispute Behind the Attack
A preliminary police investigation suggests that the attack stemmed from a personal rivalry. The accused, who reportedly disapproved of his sister’s relationship with the victim, had objected to it in the past before allegedly committing the assault.
Panic Inside the Hospital
As per a News18 report, the attack took place in full public view, with patients, attendants, and hospital staff witnessing the horrifying scene. The accused, along with two accomplices, allegedly stormed into the hospital, stabbed the doctor, and fled before security personnel could intervene. The police have launched a manhunt to track down the suspects.
Security Under Scrutiny
The incident has raised serious concerns about security lapses in public hospitals, where doctors and staff continue to face risks of physical assaults. The police have registered a case of attempted murder and are reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital premises.
Growing Concern Over Violence Against Doctors
This attack adds to the growing number of violent incidents targeting healthcare workers across India. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has recently launched a national reporting system to ensure that no case of violence against doctors goes unreported. The system allows medical professionals across the country to report incidents through a Google Form initiative.
Healthcare bodies have repeatedly urged authorities to implement strict security protocols and legal protection for medical professionals, warning that rising cases of violence are taking a toll on the morale and mental health of the medical community.
