Guwahati: In a significant anti-corruption move, the Chief Minister’s Vigilance Cell has filed a 1,497-page charge sheet against Dr. Nath, an Associate Professor at Diphu Medical College, along with another individual. The charges stem from a 52-day investigation into serious allegations of financial misconduct, forgery, and abuse of official authority.

Massive Disproportionate Assets Discovered

The charge sheet accuses Dr. Nath of amassing unaccounted wealth worth ₹12.5 crore—185% more than his known sources of income, in violation of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Authorities raided his properties and seized ₹8–9 lakh in cash, which had to be counted using a bank-grade machine.

Investigators also found evidence linking Dr. Nath to multiple private hospitals where he allegedly held undisclosed financial interests, raising questions about the misuse of his public position.

Forgery and Legal Complaints Spark Arrest

The case came to light when Dr. Rupam Mahanta, proprietor of JNSM Hospital, lodged a complaint accusing Dr. Nath of forging his signature on documents submitted to the Vigilance Cell. This led to Dr. Nath’s arrest by Mangaldoi Police and his placement under judicial custody.

Medical Registration Suspended

In response to the scandal, the Assam Medical Council has suspended Dr. Nath’s medical license for six months and ordered him to surrender all official documents within a week.

Bigamy Allegations Surface

In a further twist, Dr. Nath’s first wife has accused him of bigamy, alleging that he married another woman without legally divorcing her. Investigators are now examining whether the second woman received any illegal benefits connected to Dr. Nath’s misuse of power.

Previous Suspension and Public Fallout

Dr. Nath had previously faced suspension for negligence during his tenure at Diphu Medical College. The current investigation, with its multiple legal dimensions, has ignited public concern and cast a spotlight on corruption and ethical violations in Assam’s healthcare sector.

The case continues to unfold, with more revelations expected as authorities widen the scope of their inquiry.
