NEW DELHI — In a landmark step toward modernizing the country’s healthcare infrastructure, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has officially launched JANANI (Journey of Antenatal, Natal, and Neonatal Integrated Care). This sophisticated digital platform, unveiled at the National Summit on Innovation and Inclusivity, is designed to provide comprehensive, end-to-end monitoring of maternal and child healthcare services across India.

Developed as an advanced, service-oriented upgrade to the existing Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal, JANANI aims to eliminate the fragmentation of medical history by creating a longitudinal digital health record for women throughout their reproductive years. The platform tracks a continuous journey of care, including antenatal check-ups, delivery preparedness, institutional delivery, postnatal care, newborn monitoring, and early childhood nutrition.

A cornerstone of the initiative is the introduction of QR-enabled digital Mother and Child Health (MCH) Cards. These digital replacements for traditional physical records ensure that critical health data is portable and easily accessible to doctors at any healthcare facility nationwide. For migratory populations—who often face gaps in care when moving between states—this system provides a vital safety net, allowing for seamless data retrieval and continuity of treatment regardless of location.

Technologically, JANANI is built with a focus on early intervention. The system incorporates automated alerts for high-risk pregnancies, enabling frontline health workers and clinicians to identify vulnerable mothers and provide life-saving treatments before complications arise. It also features real-time dashboards for supervisory review and “due-list” generation, which helps health managers track beneficiaries who are pending for critical vaccinations or check-ups.

The platform demonstrates high levels of interoperability, integrating with other major national health initiatives like U-WIN for immunizations and POSHAN for nutritional tracking. To prevent duplication of records and ensure security, registration is linked to unique identifiers such as the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) and Aadhaar-based biometric verification.

As of the launch, the Health Ministry confirmed that JANANI has already reached significant milestones, including 1.34 crore beneficiary registrations and the generation of over 30 lakh digital MCH cards.

Government officials described the launch as a “structural reform” in health administration that moves beyond simple data entry to active, technology-enabled care delivery. By combining digital authentication with real-time monitoring, the government aims to achieve a long-term reduction in maternal and neonatal mortality rates, ensuring that every mother and child in India has access to equitable and timely healthcare.
