DMC Election Results Announced After High-Stakes Contest Amid Transparency Concerns

New Delhi: The much-awaited Delhi Medical Council (DMC) Elections 2026 concluded successfully on May 31, with thousands of registered medical practitioners casting their votes to elect the new eight-member governing panel of the statutory body responsible for regulating the practice of modern medicine in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.

The results, announced late Sunday night following the completion of vote counting, saw Dr. Prakash Lalchandani emerge as the highest vote-getter with 2,481 votes, closely followed by Dr. Manjusha Goel, who secured 2,388 votes.

The Delhi Medical Council functions under the Delhi Medical Council Act, 1997, and is entrusted with overseeing professional standards, ethics, and regulation of medical practitioners across Delhi.

Newly Elected Delhi Medical Council Members

Based on the votes secured, the following doctors have been elected to the eight-member panel of the Delhi Medical Council:

  1. Dr. Prakash Lalchandani – 2,481 votes
  2. Dr. Manjusha Goel – 2,388 votes
  3. Dr. Ajay Bedi – 2,312 votes
  4. Dr. Piyush Jain – 2,267 votes
  5. Dr. Rakesh Kumar Gupta – 2,206 votes
  6. Dr. Ashok Kumar Grover – 2,176 votes
  7. Dr. Ashwini Dalmiya – 2,133 votes
  8. Dr. Vipender Sabherwal – 2,017 votes

A total of 38 candidates contested the elections, making it one of the most closely watched DMC polls in recent years.

Polling Conducted at Shastri Park

Voting took place at the Delhi Medical Council premises in Shastri Park between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM on May 31. Thousands of registered doctors participated in the democratic exercise before the counting process began later in the evening.

Several prominent doctors, including Dr. Pankaj Solanki, Dr. Abhishek Garg, Dr. Ashwani Goyal, Dr. Anirudh Lochan, Dr. Ajay Lekhi, Dr. Rakesh Taneja, Dr. Sandeep Budhiraja, Dr. Rohan Krishnan, and others, also contested the elections but did not secure enough votes to enter the final eight-member council.

Election Campaign Focused on Governance, Transparency and Doctor Safety

This year’s DMC elections were conducted against the backdrop of growing concerns regarding governance and accountability within the medical regulatory body.

Key issues that dominated the campaign included allegations of corruption in the previous DMC administration, demands for greater transparency in council functioning, challenges faced by resident doctors, and concerns regarding the safety and security of healthcare professionals.

Candidates actively highlighted the need for reforms aimed at strengthening professional regulation and restoring confidence among the medical fraternity.

Delhi High Court Hearing Challenge to DMC Elections

The election process also faced legal scrutiny. A petition was filed before the Delhi High Court alleging irregularities and conflicts of interest in the conduct of the Delhi Medical Council elections.

The petitioner, who was also a candidate in the polls, claimed that members of the Election Commission were simultaneously contesting the elections they were responsible for supervising. The plea named the Government of NCT of Delhi, the Delhi Medical Council, the Delhi Medical Association (DMA), and other parties.

After hearing the matter, the Delhi High Court issued notices seeking responses from the concerned authorities and scheduled the next hearing for September 29, 2026.

Previous DMC Elections Were Halted Over Alleged Irregularities

The 2026 elections come after significant controversy surrounding the previous DMC poll process. Last year, elections were halted following objections raised by a group of doctors over alleged irregularities in the State Medical Register.

Concerns regarding procedural lapses were formally communicated to the Delhi Government and the Lieutenant Governor by members of the dissolved executive council. Several senior doctors later supported these objections, prompting authorities to halt internal voting processes at medical institutions.

With the successful completion of the 2026 elections, the newly elected council is expected to address longstanding concerns related to transparency, governance, and professional regulation while strengthening the functioning of Delhi’s medical regulatory framework.
