A late-night fire at a kidney hospital in Delhi’s Dabri area was swiftly brought under control on Sunday, with no casualties or injuries reported. The incident has once again highlighted the importance of fire safety preparedness in healthcare facilities, particularly in the wake of recent deadly fire accidents across the national capital.
Fire Breaks Out in Electrical Box at Dabri Hospital
According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), a distress call regarding the fire was received at around 10:25 PM. Fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the hospital, and firefighting teams launched prompt operations to contain the blaze.
Preliminary findings suggest that the fire originated in an electrical box located on the ground floor of the hospital premises. Firefighters managed to control the situation within a short period, preventing the flames from spreading to other parts of the building and averting a potentially major disaster.
No Injuries, Services Unaffected
Officials confirmed that no patients, attendants, or hospital staff suffered injuries during the incident. There was also no immediate information regarding significant property damage or disruption of medical services.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Authorities are continuing their assessment, while a detailed investigation is expected to establish the circumstances leading to the incident.
Delhi Fire Safety Under Increased Scrutiny
The Dabri hospital fire comes amid growing concerns over fire safety standards in Delhi following the tragic blaze at Flourish Stays Bed and Breakfast in Malviya Nagar, which claimed 21 lives and injured 25 others. Several foreign nationals were reportedly among the victims, making it one of the deadliest fire tragedies in the city in recent years.
The incident reignited debates over compliance with fire safety norms in hospitals, hotels, guest houses, commercial establishments, and residential buildings across the capital.
Over 500 Fire-Related Deaths Reported Since 2019
Government and Delhi Fire Service data indicate that more than 500 people lost their lives in fire-related incidents between 2019 and March 2026, while thousands sustained injuries.
Official records show:
- 95 deaths in 2019-20
- 41 deaths in 2020-21
- 55 deaths in 2021-22
- 95 deaths in 2022-23
- 77 deaths in 2023-24
- 90 deaths in 2024-25
- 65 deaths in 2025-26 (till March 21)
The highest annual death toll was recorded in 2019-20, largely due to the devastating Anaj Mandi fire that claimed 44 lives.
Authorities Likely to Intensify Safety Inspections
Fire safety experts attribute recurring fire incidents in Delhi to rapid urbanisation, congested access routes, illegal constructions, violations of building regulations, poor compliance with fire safety norms, and inadequate maintenance of firefighting systems.
Following recent fire tragedies, authorities are expected to intensify inspections of hospitals, hotels, guest houses, commercial complexes, and other high-risk establishments to ensure adherence to fire safety regulations and prevent future disasters.
