Hospital owner, three doctors named in complaint; special medical team to investigate

Cuttack: A serious case of alleged medical negligence has come to light in Cuttack, where a 32-year-old woman has filed a police complaint against a private hospital, accusing it of causing a life-threatening internal injury during an abortion procedure.

The woman, who underwent an abortion at the hospital on May 1, began experiencing acute abdominal pain shortly after being discharged. Her husband, a 35-year-old Army jawan posted in Jammu & Kashmir, rushed her to a Bhubaneswar-based hospital, where a CT scan revealed a 3cm cut in her intestine, allegedly sustained during the earlier procedure.

“She was critical and under observation for more than 15 days,” the husband told The Times of India, adding that they “nearly lost her due to complications.”

The complaint has been lodged at Mangalabag Police Station, naming five individuals, including the hospital owner and three doctors, for their alleged role in the botched procedure.

Following the complaint, Commissionerate Police has seized the patient’s admission and treatment documents and requested the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) of Cuttack to constitute a special medical panel to investigate the hospital’s practices.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Girija Shankar Chakraborty confirmed that the investigation is in progress. “We are collecting evidence including CCTV footage from the hospital. A medical board will conduct an independent assessment of the case,” he said.

The outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for the hospital and its staff, depending on the findings of the medical panel.
