Kolkata: At Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a statue symbolizing the victim of the RG Kar rape-murder case was found shattered on Sunday in the “Droho Gallery,” where it had been part of a protest display by junior doctors demanding justice. The gallery featured two statues, one depicting a doctor and the other the victim in a saree, but only the latter was found damaged, its face smashed. The junior doctors, uncertain if this was an accident or vandalism, did not file a police complaint and removed the remaining statue.

This incident coincides with the start of the trial of the main accused, Sanjay Roy, who faces charges under Sections 64, 66, and 103 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, related to punishment for causing death and murder. Protests have persisted since the August 9 incident, with doctors demanding justice, increased security, and accountability from hospital officials. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has criticized the doctors’ protests, suggesting political influences are at play and urging the doctors to prioritize their medical duties over protests amid ongoing work stoppages.
