Nadda Flags Off Nationwide Drive via Video Conference

Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda launched the Annual Nationwide Mass Drug Administration (MDA) Campaign for the elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) through a video conference with State Health Ministers and senior officials from 12 endemic States. The initiative marks a renewed push towards eliminating LF as a public health problem in India.

Targeting Elimination Ahead of Global Deadline

The Government of India has set an ambitious target to eliminate LF by 2027, three years ahead of the global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) timeline of 2030. The nationwide campaign aims to interrupt disease transmission, reduce morbidity, and ensure equitable access to preventive healthcare services for vulnerable communities.

Understanding Lymphatic Filariasis

Lymphatic Filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis or Haatipaon, is a vector-borne disease transmitted by the female Culex mosquito, which breeds in stagnant and polluted water. The infection damages the lymphatic system, leading to chronic swelling (lymphoedema), hydrocele, disability, and social stigma.

Endemic Spread Across Districts

Currently, LF remains endemic in 348 districts across 20 States and Union Territories. Of these, 143 districts (41 per cent) have stopped Mass Drug Administration after successfully clearing the Transmission Assessment Survey (TAS-1). Meanwhile, 174 districts (50 per cent) across 14 States continue annual MDA due to microfilaria prevalence rates above one per cent, while 31 districts are undergoing transmission assessments.

Disease Burden Remains Significant

As of 2024, more than 6.20 lakh lymphoedema cases and 1.21 lakh hydrocele cases have been reported from endemic districts. These figures underscore the need for sustained, mission-mode implementation of preventive and treatment strategies.

Focus on Directly Observed Treatment

Addressing the gathering, Shri Nadda stressed the importance of directly observed drug administration to ensure compliance and effectiveness. He highlighted that eliminating LF is not just a health objective but also a social and economic imperative, given its impact on livelihoods, productivity, and family well-being.

Strengthening Morbidity Management

The Minister emphasized Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP), including timely hydrocele surgeries and medicine distribution. He noted that Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) now covers hydrocele surgery, ensuring financial protection for patients. He also underlined the role of Ayushman Arogya Mandir in early screening, detection, and prompt care.

Whole-of-Society Approach for 2027 Goal

The current campaign is being implemented across 719 blocks in 124 districts of 12 States. Shri Nadda called for a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, urging active participation from Panchayat representatives and allied departments. He stressed that reducing microfilaria prevalence below one per cent in all endemic areas is crucial to achieving a filariasis-free India by 2027.
