AIIMS

Moradabad – The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has clarified that there are no current plans to establish an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh.

In response to a Lok Sabha inquiry from MP Mrs. Ruchi Vira, Minister of State Shri Prataprao Jadhav stated that 22 AIIMS institutions have been approved nationwide, including two in Uttar Pradesh (Raebareli and Gorakhpur).

Government’s Focus on Medical Infrastructure

Instead of setting up a new AIIMS, the government has prioritized upgrading existing medical colleges under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). In Uttar Pradesh, 11 government medical colleges (GMCs) have been upgraded, including:

  • SGPGIMS, Lucknow
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh
  • Trauma Centre, IMS-BHU, Varanasi
  • MLN Medical College, Allahabad
  • BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur
  • LLRM Medical College, Meerut

Existing Healthcare Coverage for Moradabad

The Minister pointed out that Moradabad is already served by major medical institutions within a 150-kilometer radius, including:

  • Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh
  • LLRM Medical College, Meerut

These institutions offer super-specialty healthcare services, reducing the need for a new AIIMS in the region.

Concerns Over Medical Emergencies in Moradabad

Mrs. Vira raised concerns about the lack of high-level medical facilities for Moradabad’s 38-lakh population and its large brass industry workforce. She claimed that many workers and businessmen have died untimely due to inadequate emergency healthcare. However, the government did not confirm such deaths and reiterated that the existing facilities are sufficient.

Final Clarification

The Minister firmly stated that there is no proposal for an AIIMS in Moradabad under the current phase of PMSSY, and the focus remains on upgrading and strengthening existing healthcare institutions.
