Thane: The Thane Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for allegedly operating an illegal call centre and selling controlled medications to United States citizens without authorization. The accused, identified as Akash Ravendrasingh Yadav, was apprehended on Friday following a raid by the Crime Unit of the Wagle Estate police.
Modus Operandi
Yadav posed as a representative of a legitimate pharmaceutical company and used Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology to contact US citizens. He was found selling controlled medications such as Soma, Tramadol, Viagra, Cialis, and Oxycodone without proper authorization.
The illegal operation involved the use of desktop computers and other communication devices. Police have seized several gadgets and accessories from the call centre, located in the Kapurbawdi area.
Legal Implications
According to a police official, the sale of controlled medications without proper authorization violates both national and international regulations. Yadav has been charged under multiple laws, including:
- Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Indian Penal Code equivalent) for cheating and impersonation.
- Information Technology Act for misuse of communication technology.
- Indian Telegraph Act for illegal telecommunication practices.
The investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the illegal operations and whether more individuals are involved.
