Family Alleges Months of Abuse, Surveillance and Dowry Demands Led to 26-Year-Old Woman’s Death
A BHMS (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery) doctor practicing in Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra, along with his mother and brother, has been arrested in connection with the alleged suicide of his 26-year-old wife in Ambernath near Mumbai. Police said the woman died by suicide after allegedly enduring months of physical abuse, mental harassment, dowry demands, and constant surveillance at her matrimonial home.
According to police, the woman had married the BHMS doctor on April 30. Family members stated that the relationship appeared normal before the wedding, but problems allegedly began soon after the marriage.
The victim’s relatives alleged that her husband and in-laws repeatedly subjected her to physical and mental torture over dissatisfaction with the gifts and respect they received during the wedding ceremony. They further claimed that she was pressured to bring money and gold jewellery from her parental home.
Speaking to media, a family member alleged that CCTV cameras had been installed inside and outside the house to monitor the woman’s movements. The family claimed she was frequently assaulted whenever she interacted with other people and was allegedly beaten two days before her death for speaking with a female neighbour.
Relatives said the woman had informed her mother about the abuse and harassment she was facing. Her parents were reportedly making arrangements to bring her back home when they received news of her death.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family, the Shivajinagar Police Station in Ambernath registered a case against the doctor, his mother, and his brother on charges related to physical and mental cruelty and abetment of suicide.
Senior Police Inspector Ramesh Patil stated that the accused family allegedly harassed the deceased because they were unhappy about not receiving gifts during the marriage. Police further alleged that the family had recently demanded 50 grams of gold as dowry, which the victim’s father, a rickshaw driver from Pune, was unable to provide.
All three accused have been arrested and will be produced before the court. Police said further investigation into the case is ongoing.
Police Continue Investigation Into Alleged Dowry Death
Authorities are examining the allegations of domestic violence, dowry harassment, and continuous surveillance raised by the victim’s family. Investigators are also reviewing evidence and witness statements as part of the ongoing probe into the circumstances that led to the woman’s death.
