Interns Allege Physical Abuse Over Instagram Post
Rajkot: Three MBBS interns from Bhavnagar Medical College have accused six doctors of assault, wrongful confinement, and intimidation after a dispute over an Instagram meme post. The alleged incident took place on March 6 and has led to the filing of two FIRs at Nilambaug police station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of kidnapping, causing hurt, and using obscene language.
The interns, who are currently undergoing their Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) at Sir Takhatsinghji Hospital, were reportedly taken to a secluded location, physically assaulted, and threatened by the accused doctors.
Incident Linked to Instagram Page ‘Convocation Speaks’
According to reports, the conflict stemmed from an Instagram page titled ‘Convocation Speaks’, created by the interns for humorous content. The accused doctors allegedly took offence, claiming that the posts were tarnishing the reputation of the college. This led to an aggressive confrontation and subsequent assault.
On the night of March 6, one intern received a call from a friend and went to meet him. He was allegedly forced into a car by one of the accused doctors, where two others, including a driver identified as ‘JD,’ were present. The intern and another colleague were beaten while the car was en route to Jwel Circle and later taken to a street opposite Aatmij Hotel, where other accused doctors were waiting.
The victims claim they were repeatedly assaulted, verbally abused, and forced to unlock their phones, after which the accused allegedly accessed personal images and threatened to leak them online.
Separate Allegations of Assault in Hostel Room
A third intern later filed a separate complaint stating that two of the accused doctors barged into his hostel room at 2:15 am, assaulted him while he was asleep, and forced him into an uncomfortable position.
College Administration and Police Action
Following the incident, the interns initially reported the matter to the college administration and the dean before approaching the police. Two FIRs have now been registered against the accused doctors, and investigations are ongoing.
