Engineers and Clinicians Unite to Solve Real-World Medical Challenges

All India Institute of Medical Sciences has launched a major international collaboration, bringing together engineers and clinicians from premier institutions like Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and Massachusetts Institute of Technology to develop cutting-edge solutions for critical healthcare challenges.

The initiative also includes global partners such as UiT The Arctic University of Norway, University of Oslo, University of Southampton, and SINTEF, highlighting a strong international push to integrate medical science with advanced engineering.

Focus on Doctor-Driven Innovation

Dr. Vivek Tandon from AIIMS’ Neurosurgery Department stressed that innovation must be guided by clinical needs. He explained that doctors and engineers need to collaborate closely to design tools tailored to real surgical and diagnostic requirements.

This approach ensures that technologies—such as specialized surgical cameras—are developed based on practical, real-world medical demands rather than theoretical assumptions.

Addressing Critical Gaps in Disease Prediction

A key discussion point was the challenge of predicting disease outcomes. Dr. Dipak Sapkota from the University of Oslo highlighted that patients are often more concerned about survival than diagnosis.

He pointed out the complexities in managing oral leukoplakia, a potentially cancerous condition that remains difficult to predict and often requires repeated biopsies.

Experts emphasized that no single technology can solve such problems. Instead, combining clinical data with AI-based imaging, optical spectral analysis, and advanced techniques like single-cell and spatial omics could significantly improve early detection and risk prediction.

AI in Dermatology: Bridging Global Healthcare Inequality

Dr. Somesh Gupta from AIIMS Dermatology Department highlighted a major global gap—nearly three billion people lack access to skin specialists.

He noted that most AI models are trained on lighter skin tones, making them less effective for a large portion of the global population.

To tackle this, AIIMS is collaborating with Google Health to develop India-specific AI models that can help frontline healthcare workers identify and triage skin diseases more accurately.

MadhuNetraAI: Breakthrough in Eye Care Screening

AIIMS Ophthalmology Department showcased “MadhuNetraAI,” an advanced AI system designed to detect and grade diabetic retinopathy.

With an impressive sensitivity of 98% and specificity of 96%, the tool can be deployed at the community level, enabling trained health workers to identify high-risk patients and refer them for timely treatment—while reducing unnecessary hospital visits.

Public Health Concerns: Tobacco Awareness Still a Challenge

Experts also raised concerns about the limited effectiveness of tobacco warning labels. Despite regulations, indirect advertising continues to influence consumption patterns, posing ongoing challenges for public health efforts.

‘Photonics 4 Clinics’: The Future of AI-Driven Diagnosis

The discussions are part of the ‘Photonics 4 Clinics’ workshop at AIIMS, focusing on light-based technologies combined with artificial intelligence.

This emerging field aims to detect biological changes at an early stage, improving diagnostic accuracy and enabling better clinical decision-making.

A New Era of Global Healthcare Innovation

This initiative marks a significant step toward integrating engineering, artificial intelligence, and clinical expertise. By fostering global collaboration, AIIMS Delhi is positioning itself at the forefront of next-generation healthcare innovation—aimed at improving diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes worldwide.
