Dr. Jeewan Singh Titiyal, a distinguished ophthalmologist and Padma Shri awardee, retired after an exceptional 46-year career at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. His departure marks the end of an era in Indian medical history, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking achievements, compassionate care, and academic excellence.

An Emotional Goodbye

A video of Dr. Titiyal’s farewell has touched thousands across the country. Dressed in his hospital scrubs, Dr. Titiyal walked through a corridor filled with colleagues applauding in unison. Dr. Titiyal’s association with AIIMS began in 1978 as an MBBS student. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become one of India’s most celebrated ophthalmologists, heading the Rajendra Prasad (RP) Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences.

Known for his expertise in cataract surgery and corneal diseases, he mentored over 1,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, shaping the future of Indian ophthalmology.

Pioneering Contributions

Throughout his career, Dr. Titiyal achieved numerous milestones:

  • First in India to Perform INTACS: Introduced this advanced surgical procedure for treating complex corneal conditions, including myopia.
  • Leadership at RP Centre: His tenure as Chief of RP Centre (from 2021) brought significant advancements in clinical care and infrastructure.
  • Establishment of NOSSDC: Founded the National Ophthalmic Surgical Skill Development Centre, transforming surgical training and setting a benchmark for resident education nationwide.

Awards and Recognitions

Dr. Titiyal was honored with the Padma Shri in 2014 for his outstanding contributions to medicine. His efforts in patient care, research, and education have been widely lauded, with colleagues describing his leadership as “inspirational and unmatched.”

Dr. Namrata Sharma, Professor of Ophthalmology at AIIMS, remarked, “He has left an indelible mark, not just in ophthalmology but in the hearts of everyone he worked with.”
