BENGALURU – The National Health Authority (NHA) has unveiled a series of groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovations designed to revolutionize the claims management ecosystem under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). The two-day Auto-Adjudication Hackathon Showcase 2026, which concluded on Saturday at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, demonstrated how machine learning and advanced computer vision are being leveraged to enhance transparency, speed, and integrity in India’s flagship health assurance scheme.

Technological Leap in Claims Processing

Currently, the AB PM-JAY ecosystem processes nearly 50,000 claims daily across more than 1,900 treatment packages. While a portion of these are already auto-adjudicated, the NHA is moving toward a future-ready framework where AI reduces manual intervention. Innovations showcased included multilingual Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems capable of extracting data from low-quality medical scans and classifying clinical documents to ensure compliance with Standard Treatment Guidelines (STGs).

One of the standout demonstrations involved radiology-based AI tools that analyze X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs in real-time. These systems correlate clinical findings with hospital reports to validate the necessity and accuracy of the claimed treatments, effectively acting as an automated “second opinion” for insurance adjusters.

Combatting Sophisticated Fraud

A major focus of the event was the responsible use of AI in fraud detection. With hospitals increasingly submitting digital clinical notes and diagnostic reports, the NHA highlighted the rising threat of manipulated documents. Showcased technologies included:

  • Deepfake and Forgery Detection: Tools capable of identifying AI-generated medical documents, forged discharge summaries, and manipulated images where patient details have been altered.
  • Behavioral Pattern Analysis: Systems that flag unusual trends, such as multiple beneficiaries from a single region traveling to a specific distant hospital for identical treatments shortly after obtaining their Ayushman cards.
  • Billing Integrity: AI models that verify if laboratory parameters—such as creatinine levels—genuinely support procedures like dialysis, automatically flagging claims that do not align with medical logic.

According to NHA officials, existing anti-fraud measures have already prevented fraudulent claims worth approximately ₹630 crore. The integration of these new tools is expected to further curb leakages and ensure that public funds reach the intended beneficiaries.

Global Leadership and Future Integration

Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO of NHA, noted that India is among the first countries in the Global South to develop a Health AI benchmarking platform. This platform uses India-specific datasets to train models, ensuring they remain relevant to the local clinical environment and multilingual document landscape.

The hackathon, which drew over 3,500 participants, awarded top honors to teams like Team Nirnaya for their work on document classification. These winning solutions are now being considered for real-world deployment, promising a more accountable and efficient digital public infrastructure that can scale to meet the needs of India’s growing senior citizen population and other newly added beneficiaries.
