NHA Integrates Google’s Gemma 4 and Medical Data Toolkit into Aarogya Setu 2.0

In a major step towards strengthening India’s digital healthcare ecosystem, the National Health Authority (NHA) has integrated Google’s Gemma 4 open AI model and the Medical Data Toolkit into the Aarogya Setu 2.0 application. The upgraded platform is designed to function as an AI-enabled Personal Health Record (PHR) management system, allowing citizens to securely access, manage and understand their health records through a centralized digital platform.

The initiative forms part of the growing collaboration between NHA and Google to enhance India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for healthcare and support the objectives of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

AI to Convert Unstructured Medical Records into Digital Health Profiles

Using Gemma 4 and the Medical Data Toolkit, Aarogya Setu 2.0 can process unstructured medical documents, including reports and health records, and convert them into a structured digital format. The technology helps users obtain a comprehensive digital view of their medical history, enabling the creation of detailed health profiles and health journeys.

The AI-powered system can identify different types of health records and extract critical information such as laboratory test names, diagnostic methods, observations and results from both text and image-based documents.

Standardized Health Data Through FHIR Integration

A key feature of the Medical Data Toolkit is its ability to map extracted information into Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), a globally recognized standard for exchanging healthcare data. This standardization enables seamless sharing of health records across hospitals, clinics and healthcare providers.

The structured approach is expected to improve continuity of care by ensuring smoother transitions of patient information when individuals seek treatment from multiple healthcare institutions.

Google Highlights Role of AI in Strengthening India’s Health Infrastructure

Commenting on the collaboration, Preeti Lobana, Vice President and Country Manager, Google India, said the company is pleased that its AI capabilities are contributing to the strengthening of India’s digital health infrastructure.

She stated that the tools are designed to help citizens take greater control of their healthcare journeys while also reducing barriers for developers and healthcare innovators. According to her, the initiative could encourage the creation of new digital health solutions addressing both national and global healthcare challenges.

Open-Source Toolkit Available Free for Developers and Healthcare Organizations

Google has made the Medical Data Toolkit open-source and available at no cost to developers, healthcare organizations and the broader digital health ecosystem. The toolkit can support applications that require digitization and standardization of legacy medical records while ensuring compliance with interoperability standards under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.

The initial version has been optimized for commonly used health records, including laboratory reports and clinical observations, with the potential for broader healthcare applications in the future.

Users Retain Full Control Over Their Health Data

According to NHA, all health records and personal health information remain under the control of users within the Aarogya Setu 2.0 platform. The Medical Data Toolkit uses predefined rules to structure extracted information while supporting secure management of digital health records.

The integration of AI-powered health record management is expected to accelerate India’s digital healthcare transformation and improve accessibility, portability and interoperability of patient data across the healthcare system.
