Expresses Concern Over Recent Attacks on Medical Professionals
Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) state unit has urged the central government to prioritize the enactment of a nationwide hospital protection law, highlighting the need for stronger security measures following multiple violent incidents targeting healthcare workers. Although initial efforts to introduce such a law began after the Kolkata rape incident, the legislative process stalled, leaving healthcare professionals vulnerable.
The IMA’s call for action was intensified by the recent brutal attack on Dr. Balaji Jagannathan at Chennai’s Kalainjar Centenary Hospital, where he was stabbed by a patient’s son and remains in critical condition. The association emphasized the urgency, stating that it “cannot afford to wait for another incident of violence or death” to prompt action.
Additionally, the IMA criticized the lack of strict enforcement of existing hospital protection laws in states like Kerala, citing recent incidents where offenders were treated leniently. Dr. K.A. Sreevilsan, IMA state president, pointed to the assault at Chettuva TM Hospital in Thrissur, where accused individuals were released on bail shortly after arrest. In another case involving MLA P.V. Anvar at the Chelakkara Taluk Hospital, authorities have yet to take action beyond filing a case.
The IMA will soon submit a memorandum to press the central government and state authorities to address the rising violence against medical professionals and to ensure stricter enforcement of hospital protection laws.
