National Medical Commission Mandates Registration Number Updates for Faculty, Junior and Senior Residents on AEBAS Portal
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has directed all medical colleges and institutions to mandatorily update the National Medical Register (NMR) or State Medical Register (SMR) registration numbers of their medical faculty and specified teaching staff on the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS) portal within one month।
In an Office Memorandum, the NMC said it had observed that nodal officers at various medical colleges had, in several instances, left the NMR/SMR number field blank while initially registering faculty members on the AEBAS portal।
NMR and SMR Details Mandatory for Medical Faculty
The NMC referred to provisions under the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Minimum Standard Requirements (MSR) and Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) Regulations, which provide for periodic, transparent and digitally verified assessment of teaching staff across medical institutions।
The Commission has therefore directed all medical colleges and institutions to immediately review and update the NMR/SMR registration numbers in the profile details of their medical faculty, Junior Residents (JRs), Senior Residents (SRs), Tutors and Demonstrators on the NMC AEBAS portal।
NMC Issues Instructions for AEBAS Profile Updates
The Commission has laid down specific instructions for nodal officers while updating the information on the AEBAS portal।
Medical Faculty and JR/SR/Tutor/Demonstrator: Nodal officers must enter the correct and valid NMR/SMR registration numbers of all medical faculty members, Junior Residents, Senior Residents, Tutors and Demonstrators in the designated field। Leaving the registration number field blank is strictly prohibited।
Non-Medical Faculty: Faculty members and Tutors/Demonstrators holding MSc and PhD qualifications must have ‘NA’ entered in the registration number field।
Timeline: The AEBAS profiles of all faculty members, JRs, SRs, Tutors and Demonstrators must be updated by the respective medical college nodal officers within one month of the NMC notice।
Non-Compliance May Affect NMC Assessment
The NMC has warned that failure to update the required information within the stipulated deadline will result in the blocking and automatic rejection of daily attendance through the NMC system।
The Commission further stated that such non-compliance may adversely affect the compliance status of the concerned medical college during NMC assessments and inspections।
National Medical Register Database
The National Medical Register (NMR) is a centralised database of registered medical practitioners in modern medicine in India। The NMR portal was launched by Union Health Minister J P Nadda on August 23, 2024, with the objective of creating an authentic national database of allopathic doctors in the country।
The latest NMC directive links the AEBAS attendance and verification system more closely with registration details maintained through the NMR and State Medical Registers, making accurate registration information an important component of institutional compliance।
