Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital will undergo a major infrastructure upgrade under a Rs 394 crore Jharkhand government project, with plans to increase MBBS seats from 150 to 250 and postgraduate seats from 52 to 150 within three years.
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jharkhand is set for a major expansion under a Rs 394 crore state government project aimed at strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure.
Under the proposed expansion, the number of MBBS seats will be increased from the existing 150 to 250, while postgraduate seats are planned to rise from 52 to 150 over the next three years.
The upgraded facility will also introduce robotic surgery and spinal surgery services, expanding the range of specialised treatment available at the institution.
Health Department Assesses MGMMCH Infrastructure
Jharkhand Health Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh said that the Health Department has sought detailed information from MGMMCH regarding its existing infrastructure, faculty strength, specialist doctors, medical equipment and digital and management systems.
The assessment is being carried out to determine whether the medical college meets the requirements of the National Medical Commission (NMC) for the proposed increase in medical seats.
MGMMCH Principal Dr Sanjay Kumar and Superintendent Dr Balram Jha have been asked to provide details regarding the current status of the institution and its infrastructure requirements.
The hospital management has also been asked to submit information related to its application for increasing medical seats and provide details of critical healthcare facilities.
ICU, SNCU and Blood Bank Facilities Under Review
The assessment will cover facilities including the intensive care unit (ICU), Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), blood bank and blood storage facilities.
The government will also assess the availability of doctors, nurses, paramedical personnel, laboratory technicians and other healthcare staff at the institution.
The exercise is intended to identify infrastructure, human-resource and equipment requirements necessary for the proposed expansion of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
500-Bed Super-Speciality Hospital Proposed
The Jharkhand State Building Corporation (JSBC) will prepare a detailed project report for developing a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the MGMMCH Sakchi campus.
The proposed development will include a modern library, hostels and other necessary infrastructure to support the expanded medical college and hospital.
The project is expected to strengthen both clinical services and medical education facilities at MGMMCH.
District Hospitals to Be Converted into Multi-Speciality Facilities
Alongside the MGMMCH expansion, the Jharkhand government is preparing to strengthen healthcare services across districts.
Civil surgeons have been instructed to begin preparations for converting district sadar hospitals into multi-speciality facilities and to initiate recruitment of specialist doctors.
The state government also plans to appoint 125 hospital managers to strengthen hospital administration. Dedicated management support will be provided at district-level healthcare facilities.
In addition, the government has planned 50-bed maternity and child hospitals in the districts, with each such facility proposed to have 10 doctors.
