The Himachal Pradesh government has approved a 78 per cent increase in the monthly remuneration of contract and job trainee medical officers (specialists) serving in the state’s public healthcare system. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that their monthly remuneration has been increased from Rs 33,660 to Rs 60,000, with the move aimed at attracting more specialist doctors to government health institutions, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
Remuneration Increased from Rs 33,660 to Rs 60,000
The latest revision follows the previous remuneration hike implemented in 2022 based on the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission. At that time, the monthly remuneration of contract and job trainee medical officers was increased from around Rs 27,000 to Rs 33,660.
The state government said the latest increase is intended to encourage more specialist doctors to join and continue serving in government healthcare institutions. The move is particularly aimed at improving the availability of specialists in remote and underserved areas of Himachal Pradesh.
Revised Stipends for Postgraduate Medical Students
The government has also revised the stipends of postgraduate medical students in government medical colleges. Under the revised structure, first-year postgraduate students receive Rs 50,000 per month, while second-year and third-year students receive Rs 60,000 and Rs 65,000, respectively.
The stipends for senior residents and tutor specialists have also been increased to Rs 1 lakh per month. Super specialists and senior residents working in super-speciality disciplines receive Rs 1.30 lakh per month.
Focus on Strengthening Public Healthcare
Sukhu said healthcare and education remain among his government’s top priorities. According to the state government, the latest remuneration revision is expected to support the availability of specialist doctors and further strengthen medical services across the public healthcare system.
The increase comes as part of broader measures to improve remuneration for doctors and medical trainees in government institutions and encourage medical professionals to serve across the state.
