Renowned Medical Oncologist and Former GCRI Director Leaves Behind a Lasting Legacy in Oncology, Research and Medical Education
India’s renowned medical oncologist and Padma Shri awardee Dr Pankaj Shah passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 76, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy in cancer treatment, medical research, and healthcare education. Widely regarded as one of Gujarat’s most respected cancer specialists, Dr Shah dedicated over five decades to providing quality and affordable cancer care, earning immense respect from the medical fraternity and countless patients across the country.
A Lifetime Dedicated to Cancer Care
Dr Pankaj Shah was recognised as one of the pioneers of medical oncology in India. Throughout his distinguished career, he remained committed to advancing cancer treatment while ensuring accessible healthcare for patients.
At the time of his demise, he served as Vice President of the Gujarat Cancer Society, Special Advisor to the Chairman of the Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI), Professor Emeritus of Medical Oncology at GCRI, and Trustee of Sadvichar Parivar. He was also a senior oncologist and haematologist associated with Zydus Cancer Hospital.
Distinguished Leadership at GCRI
Dr Shah played a pivotal role in shaping cancer care services in Gujarat through his long association with the Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI).
He served as:
- Director of GCRI (2002–2011)
- Chief of Medical Oncology (1973–2002)
- Founder teacher of the DM Medical Oncology programme at Gujarat University (1993–2011)
- Secretary of the Gujarat Cancer Society (1994–2002)
His leadership significantly contributed to strengthening oncology education, research, and patient care in the state.
National Leadership in Oncology and Haematology
Beyond Gujarat, Dr Shah held several prestigious positions in national medical organisations.
He served as:
- President of the Indian Society of Medical and Pediatric Oncology (1997–1999)
- President of the Indian Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (1993–1994)
His contributions helped advance oncology and haematology practices across India while mentoring generations of medical professionals.
Recipient of Padma Shri and Numerous National Honours
Dr Pankaj Shah’s outstanding contributions to medicine and cancer care were recognised through several prestigious awards.
In 2018, he was conferred the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours.

Final Rites to Be Held in Ahmedabad
According to reports, Dr Shah’s final journey will begin from his residence at Karmayog Heights near the St. Xavier’s College–HL Commerce College junction in Navrangpura, Ahmedabad, before proceeding to the VS Crematorium at Ellisbridge. His last rites are scheduled to be held at 6:30 pm on Thursday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed deep condolences over Dr Pankaj Shah’s demise, describing it as an “irreparable loss to the healthcare world.”
Paying tribute through social media, he said Dr Shah devoted his entire life to cancer treatment and research and helped provide a new lease of life to countless patients through his dedicated service and medical expertise.
