Uttar Pradesh approves ambitious AYUSH expansion plan with new medical units, homoeopathic colleges, AI-enabled education, smart classrooms and strengthened healthcare services across underserved regions
In a major initiative to strengthen AYUSH healthcare infrastructure, education and public health services, the Uttar Pradesh Government has approved a Rs 613.42 crore Annual Action Plan (AAP) for 2026-27 under the National Ayush Mission (NAM). The comprehensive proposal includes the establishment of 23 new AYUSH Medical Units, introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) courses in 17 AYUSH colleges, construction of new government homoeopathic medical colleges and hospitals, and expansion of healthcare services in underserved districts across the state.
The decisions were taken during the 12th Governing Body meeting of the National Ayush Mission (NAM)-Uttar Pradesh, chaired by Chief Secretary Shri S.P. Goyal. The approved Annual Action Plan will now be forwarded to the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, for final approval.
Chief Secretary Directs Faster Completion of AYUSH Infrastructure Projects
Reviewing the progress of ongoing projects, Chief Secretary S.P. Goyal expressed concern over delays in the construction of government homoeopathic medical colleges and hospitals. He directed the Principal Secretary, AYUSH, and the Mission Director to conduct monthly project reviews and regular field inspections to ensure timely completion of infrastructure works.
He further instructed officials to initiate the recruitment process for required staff simultaneously with construction activities so that newly established institutions become operational immediately after the completion of buildings.
Rs 458.99 Crore Allocated for New Initiatives
Under the proposed Annual Action Plan, Rs 458.99 crore has been earmarked for new initiatives, while Rs 154.42 crore has been allocated for continuing ongoing programmes.
The proposal includes the establishment of 23 new AYUSH Medical Units, construction of Government Homoeopathic Medical Colleges and Hospitals in Jhansi and Shahjahanpur, development of new AYUSH dispensaries, and strengthening of existing healthcare infrastructure across Uttar Pradesh.
The meeting also emphasised upgrading AYUSH dispensaries, hospitals and Arogya Mandirs to improve the accessibility, quality and effectiveness of traditional healthcare services throughout the state.
AI Courses and Smart Classrooms to Modernise AYUSH Education
In a significant move towards integrating technology into traditional medical education, the Uttar Pradesh Government has proposed introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) courses in 17 AYUSH colleges.
Additionally, 51 smart classrooms will be established with an investment of Rs 3.03 crore to modernise teaching infrastructure. A girls’ hostel at Government Ayurveda College, Varanasi, will also be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1.78 crore, aiming to improve residential facilities for female students.
Mobile Medical Units Expanding Healthcare Access
Highlighting the achievements of AYUSH public health programmes, Principal Secretary AYUSH Shri Ranjan Kumar informed that the Public Health Programme in Lakhimpur Kheri screened, counselled and referred 2,12,435 patients during the 2025-26 financial year.
He further stated that AYUSH Mobile Medical Units are currently delivering healthcare services in underserved districts, including Bahraich, Balrampur, Chandauli, Chitrakoot, Fatehpur, Shravasti, Siddharthnagar, Sonbhadra and Kushinagar, helping improve access to medical care in remote areas.
Focus on Osteoarthritis and Palliative Care
The governing body also reviewed initiatives aimed at strengthening AYUSH-based management of osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders through Ayurveda colleges in Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Jhansi, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Muzaffarnagar and Atarra.
In addition, the ‘Karunya’ Integrated Supportive and Palliative Care Programme continues to provide home-based care for patients suffering from lifestyle-related diseases and mental health conditions across 55 development blocks in Uttar Pradesh.
With a strong focus on infrastructure development, digital education, healthcare accessibility and institutional expansion, the proposed Annual Action Plan seeks to significantly enhance the AYUSH ecosystem in Uttar Pradesh while improving healthcare delivery and medical education across the state.
